First Baptist of Ivy Gap

FEBRUARY 7 – MARCH 14, 2010
Performances begin Feb. 7; Opening night Feb.11

by Ron Osborne

If you had tickets to a performance that was cancelled due to weather conditions, we can reschedule you for another date at (804) 282-2620.

This warm Southern comedy, full of humor and pathos introduces us to six very different women who come together during WWII at church to roll bandages and plan the church’s 75th anniversary. We meet Edith, the pastor’s wise-cracking wife, the witty Luby, Mae Ellen, the rebellious organist and more zany characters. Fast forwarding twenty-five years, these six women reunite, but much has changed…and hasn’t. "...will be compared to Steel Magnolias, but forget steel; these mountain magnolias are pure gold."

Acts of FaithActs of Faith Festival: First Baptist of Ivy Gap is part of The Acts of Faith Festival, the nation's largest faith inspired theatre event. The Panel Discussion will take place on Feb. 21 immediately following the performance. (You do not have to attend that particular performance to attend the discussion afterwards). Faith groups (of 15 or more) attending during the festival will receive a reduced $28 ticket price. For more information about the festival, visit www.theactsoffaith.org.

Dedication: With affection and respect, we dedicate this production to the memory of Oriana Hargrove, recipient with her husband Frank of Barksdale's 2009 Hanover Heroes Award. A longtime supporter of Hanover Tavern, which Barksdale's founders purchased in 1953 and sustained for over 40 years, Mrs. Hargrove dedicated countless hours to community service. Her generosity has been invaluable, and the impact of her caring spirit will live on forever.

Butterflies are Free

APRIL 9 - MAY 16, 2010
by Leonard Gershe
After its sold-out world premiere this fresh, sunny comedy by Leonard Gershe (Oscar nominee for his classic screenplay Funny Face) transferred to Broadway, won a Tony Award and ran for a crowd-pleasing three years. Loosely based on the life of blind attorney Harold Krents, and featuring original music by Stephen Schwartz (composer of Godspell and the current mega-hit Wicked), Butterflies are Free tells the story of Don Baker, an ambitious young man who, though sightless from birth, moves into an apartment in New York City, leaving his protective family in Scarsdale for the freedom and independence (and romance) he has always craved.

SEPTEMBER 24 - NOVEMBER 7, 2010
Written by Connie Ray; Conceived by Alan Bailey; Musical Arrangements by Mike Craver
It’s October, 1945 and the gospel-singing Sanders Family is back together again! The war is over and America’s years of prosperity are just beginning. But there’s another kind of rite of passage at Mount Pleasant Baptist Church, where Reverend Mervin Oglethorpe is giving his last service. He’s been called to preach in Texas, and he’s already bought a ten-gallon hat and is preparing to ride into the sunset with his wife, June, who is eight months pregnant. Tomorrow morning, young Dennis Sanders takes over as Mount Pleasant’s pastor. Join the Sanders Family as they send Mervin and June off in style, with
hilarious and touching stories and twenty-five toe-tapping Bluegrass Gospel favorites.
